Objective:
Implement and test a firewall setup to strengthen network security by controlling and monitoring traffic in a home lab environment.
Firewall Configuration
What I Did:

-
Firewall Installation and Configuration:
Deployed and configured a software-based firewall (e.g., pfSense) within my home lab to serve as the network’s security barrier. -
Rule Creation:
Designed and implemented custom firewall rules to block or allow specific IP addresses, ports, and protocols, ensuring the system adhered to best practices for traffic filtering. -
Testing and Validation:
Used tools like Netcat to simulate network traffic and Wireshark to analyze packet data, verifying that the firewall rules were correctly applied and effective in blocking unauthorized traffic. -
Optimization:
Fine-tuned the configuration to ensure optimal performance and security, documenting each step for repeatability and scalability.

Key Skills Demonstrated:
-
Writing and managing firewall rules
-
Traffic filtering and monitoring
-
Hands-on experience with tools like pfSense, Netcat, and Wireshark
-
Network security best practices

Outcome:
Successfully implemented and tested a functional firewall setup that effectively filtered and monitored traffic. This project reinforced my understanding of firewall configuration and network security, showcasing my ability to deploy and manage defensive technologies in a controlled environment.
