What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the concept that neurological differences—such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and others—are natural variations of the human brain. These differences are not deficits but unique perspectives that contribute to creativity, problem-solving, and innovation.

Fun Fact: The term “neurodiversity” was coined in the late 1990s by sociologist Judy Singer, who emphasized the value of embracing diverse ways of thinking.

Why Focus on Women?

Women in tech face significant underrepresentation, and for neurodivergent women, the challenges are amplified. Societal biases, workplace stigmas, and lack of resources often leave many neurodivergent women feeling overlooked and unsupported.

The Stats Tell the Story:

  • Only 24% of STEM roles are held by women, and fewer are neurodivergent.

  • 80% of women with ADHD remain undiagnosed until adulthood

  • Neurodivergent women are 3x more likely to mask their traits, leading to burnout

Challenges Faced by Neurodivergent Women
in Tech

  1. Bias and Stigma: Misunderstandings about neurodivergence often lead to microaggressions or exclusion.

  2. Burnout and Overwork: Many neurodivergent women struggle with managing energy and time in traditional work environments.

  3. Masking: The pressure to hide traits like impulsivity or sensory sensitivities can cause stress and emotional fatigue.

Celebrating Strengths

Despite these challenges, neurodivergent individuals bring unique strengths to the tech industry:

  • Hyperfocus: Solving complex problems with laser-sharp focus.

  • Creative Thinking: Viewing problems from unconventional perspectives.

  • Pattern Recognition: Quickly identifying trends or discrepancies in data.

At Neurodivergent Women in Tech, we believe these strengths deserve recognition, not suppression.
